Hip Contusion

What is a hip contusion?

A hip contusion is a mild injury that can occur due to a direct impact on the hip. When a bruise or contusion occurs, the small blood vessels get damaged, and blood leaks out under the skin. This causes swelling and bruising in the area.

What causes a hip contusion?

A hip contusion usually results from a direct blow to the hip. Contusions are often the result of sports-related injuries. Hip contusions are common in contact sports such as soccer and rugby.

What are the symptoms of a hip contusion?

  • Pain or stiffness in the hip
  • Bruising or redness around the hip
  • Swelling of the hip
  • Difficulty putting weight on the hip

How are hip contusions treated?

Hip contusions rarely require surgery but are treated with conservative methods instead. Some conservative treatment methods include:

  • Rest, including laying flat to take the weight off the hip
  • Crutches or cane for extra support
  • Cold compresses to manage pain and swelling
  • Over-the-counter pain medication

A physical therapist can treat more severe contusions.
